Notes from the Chair
This is the home of the Pottawatomie County Democratic Party of Kansas. We are here to listen to any and all concerns, and with your support will facilitate the election of individuals who will once again allow us to sleep at night. As a County Party, our goal is to expand and improve our communication.
Thank you to all that could attend our February & March meetings. Both were well attended. “No hour of life is wasted that is spent with supportive friends.” Once again, you will ultimately make the difference. And remember, '“If you climb in the saddle, be ready for the ride.”
It was great to see Pottawatomie County Dems represented at the “Hands Off Rally” on April 5th. The group had just under 1000 very polite protesters with creative signs and fun costumes. If you want to improve your mental health, attend and make a statement. And we joined Manhattan again just this last Saturday, April 19.
In recent news events, we have been made aware people are being deported without due process. This is not the first incidence of a president who attempted to override constitutional rights. In 1841, President Van Buren attempted the extradition of fifty-five slaves, wrongfully treated as property, back to Cuba. Former President John Quincy Adams was enlisted to represent these enslaved individuals. Adams fought the government, and after speaking for nine straight hours, won the Amistad Case before the Supreme Court and set them free.
Please contact your Senators to vote “no” against bill H.R. 22 called the SAVE Act or better known as the “Silencing Americans Act”. This bill is designed to cut the voting rolls back. It will end mail-in voter registration, proof of citizenship will no longer be a simple driver’s license, it will require a birth certificate, or a passport based off the birth certificate. Married people who have changed their names would now not be able to register using original birth certificates; thus, disenfranchising women, trans, and nonbinary people. And unless college student had their birth certificates stashed in their dorm rooms, registering to vote would not be allowed.
